Storage reports provide context. A deficit alone does not establish delivered price or the best commercial contract.
Read period and units
Use EIA's weekly report. Record week, release date, working-gas level, change and comparison periods. Old headlines may describe conditions that ended. Distinguish weekly change from inventory and last-year comparisons from multi-year averages.
Understand the connection
Storage is one of several supply and demand factors. Weather, production, trade, economic activity and infrastructure also matter. One statistic cannot determine price direction.
Separate delivered components
Offers may include commodity, basis, transport, balancing and fees. Confirm point, units and obligations. Henry Hub context is not the full delivered price elsewhere.
Budget retained exposure
Identify fixed, indexed and passed-through components. Apply seasonal use to periods. Test commodity and basis separately, including occupancy and heating changes.
Use a documented process
Set budget limits, identify renewal deadlines and obtain comparable offers. Preserve report versions, quotes and assumptions. Similar delivery points can support coordinated portfolio review while retaining meter-level obligations.
