Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.
Battery storage financing: capacity, dispatch and replacement
A battery’s power rating in MW and stored energy in MWh describe different capabilities. A financing model needs both, along with usable capacity, efficiency, dispatch limits and the expected replacement or augmentation plan. The same asset cannot earn every possible revenue stream simultaneously.
What to evaluate
Revenue estimates should identify the market, product, dispatch obligation and payment mechanism. Test whether reserving capacity for one service prevents arbitrage or another service. ERCOT does not operate a centralized capacity market comparable to PJM; do not insert generic capacity payments into a Texas model.
Build a defensible comparison
Carry charging costs, auxiliary consumption, round-trip losses, cycle wear, insurance, fire protection, controls and future augmentation through the cash-flow model. Require a quote that clearly separates battery cells from the installed system. For example, an assumed $100 million project with 100 MW and 400 MWh is $1,000/kW and $250/kWh; these are arithmetic illustrations, not market prices.
Documents and questions to prepare
- MW, usable MWh and duration at the required output
- Warranty throughput and augmentation assumptions
- Interconnection, dispatch and market qualification
- Safety design and insurer review
For commercial property owners
Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.
Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.
For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
