Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.

Green bonds: use of proceeds and reporting

A green bond is debt associated with a defined environmental use of proceeds. The green label does not remove issuer credit risk, guarantee an investor return or make all project spending eligible. Investors still need the offering and contractual debt terms.

What to evaluate

A financing plan should define eligible assets, selection controls, allocation tracking, treatment of unallocated proceeds and reporting. Keep allocation reporting separate from claims about measured environmental impact. Do not count the same financing amount as several independent funding sources.

Build a defensible comparison

For project owners, compare issuance costs and continuing disclosure obligations with other funding. Public capital-market structures may require specialized securities, legal and accounting work. Verify any external review or certification claim against the actual engagement and report.

Documents and questions to prepare

  • Eligible uses and allocation controls
  • Debt terms and issuer repayment capacity
  • Independent review scope
  • Continuing allocation and impact reporting

For commercial property owners

Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.

Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.

For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
