Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.
Institutional renewable investment and diligence
Institutional investment requires a project or portfolio that can support the investor’s mandate, risk tolerance and diligence. Investors differ in permitted technologies, geography, ownership structure and time horizon. A generic target return does not establish market acceptance.
What to evaluate
Prepare a reconciled financial model, legal ownership structure, technical reports and operating contracts. Explain forecast versus historic performance, concentration, merchant exposure and future capital needs. Separate enterprise value from the equity proceeds remaining after debt and transaction adjustments.
Build a defensible comparison
A portfolio presentation should identify sponsor conflicts, related-party arrangements, exit assumptions and restrictions on transfers. Environmental claims require a defined baseline and measurement method. Fundraising or investment introductions should not be represented as a Jaken service without a confirmed engagement and scope.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Ownership, governance and investor rights
- Technical and commercial diligence
- Base and downside cash flows
- Valuation, exit and conflict disclosures
For commercial property owners
Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.
Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.
For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
