Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.
Offshore wind financing and marine construction risk
Offshore wind combines generation risk with marine construction, offshore logistics and transmission interfaces. Project economics depend on the development site, turbine design, seabed, port access and offtake terms. An onshore project’s capital or operating assumptions cannot be transferred directly.
What to evaluate
Review lease and permit status, geotechnical work, export cable routes and the responsibility for grid connection. Vessel availability, weather windows and component delivery affect completion. Construction contracts should identify interfaces among turbine supply, foundations, cables and installation rather than leave gaps between contractors.
Build a defensible comparison
Operating diligence includes marine access, major-component replacements, availability and insurance exclusions. Test completion delay, additional construction cost and offtaker remedies together. Government targets or announced projects do not constitute a funding commitment or an executed revenue contract.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Lease, environmental and grid approvals
- Marine logistics and construction interfaces
- Offtake and completion protections
- Service, insurance and replacement access
For commercial property owners
Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.
Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.
For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
