Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.
Renewable energy tax credits: a project-specific review
Clean-energy tax incentives are governed by the applicable tax section, technology, taxpayer, construction dates and placed-in-service dates. A historic article or sales proposal is insufficient evidence that a new project qualifies. Separate a credit from a deduction, grant or operating revenue.
What to evaluate
Federal legislation enacted in 2025 changed several deadlines and restrictions. As reviewed October 12, 2026, the IRS Form 3468 instructions describe revised rules, including wind and solar termination provisions and prohibited foreign entity restrictions. This guide intentionally does not quote a universal credit percentage or promise eligibility through 2032.
Build a defensible comparison
Before a financing decision, obtain a dated project-specific tax analysis. It should identify the relevant section, eligible basis, labor requirements or exceptions, construction evidence, sourcing restrictions, registration and reporting, recapture exposure, and whether transfer or elective-payment rules apply. Include a no-credit cash-flow scenario until the benefit is supported.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Identify the taxpayer and credit section
- Document construction and service milestones
- Review qualified costs, labor and sourcing
- Reconcile monetization, timing and recapture
For commercial property owners
Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.
Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.
For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
