Energy project finance reference. This educational resource covers project investment and financing concepts. It is separate from Jaken Energy’s commercial electricity and natural gas procurement service; it is not a financing offer or a promise of funding.
Small hydropower financing and licensing
Small hydropower depends on the available head and flow, equipment configuration and applicable authorizations. Existing civil works may create opportunities, but their condition and legal use must be established. Smaller project size does not automatically remove licensing obligations.
What to evaluate
Review hydrology over a suitable period, drought exposure, environmental flow requirements and the cost of civil and electrical work. A generation estimate should reflect operating restrictions and seasonal flows. Confirm the FERC license or exemption pathway and any other permits with the relevant authorities.
Build a defensible comparison
For an operating-asset acquisition, examine license term, renewal conditions, dam safety, inspection findings and major rehabilitation. Separate production-based energy revenue from any other value that requires market qualification. The financing term should fit both the asset life and the enforceable rights to operate.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Hydrology, head and production assessment
- FERC pathway and additional permits
- Civil works and rehabilitation needs
- Offtake, operating rights and license duration
For commercial property owners
Start with the property’s actual accounts, lease responsibilities and plans for ownership or sale. Keep commodity procurement, building improvements and project investment as separate decisions. Include the costs you retain and the savings you retain after tenant reimbursement. An improvement that lowers a tenant-paid expense may benefit tenants without producing the same increase in owner income.
Prepare a base case and a downside case using dated evidence for costs, revenue and funding. Any financing rate, tax benefit or return is a project assumption until supported by current documents. Legal, tax, engineering and lender review should follow the actual transaction.
For the existing property’s supply-cost decision, use the contract-cost calculator or request a property energy review.
